About 25 years ago, two orthopaedic surgeons from Fairhope, Alabama began traveling to underdeveloped countries to provide surgical interventions. Because of the need they encountered, they committed to make yearly trips overseas.
In 1999 Bayside Medical Missions was formed. A 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, it provides opportunities for support teams and health care professionals to offer medical care to those who would otherwise not be able to receive it.
Among the countries served are: Haiti, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Western Sahara, Papua New Guinea and Ecuador. Since the year 2000 BMM has worked in Ecuador developing a strong relationship with local physicians and professionals to improve the quality of care for children in their country.
A child with skeletal malformation is challenged to lead a normal life. His disability affects his ability to play, interact with peers, go to school. His self-esteem can be affected and his opportunities for being a contributing member of his society are limited. After surgical correction, it is heartwarming to see the smile on a childŐs face. And, the gratefulness and joy of his parents.
We seek to serve with love and compassion those whom God places in our reach. To provide the best orthopaedic care possible, enhancing the lives of the people we serve. While the services of the volunteer doctors are provided free of charge, there are always expenses associated with the surgeries. In 2008 in Ecuador the average cost to a family is $350
