The Walk for Wheelchairs was a huge success once again! Teal and four friends left our house on Monday, April 6th and completed the 33-mile circumference of Perdido Key on Wednesday.
They walked 13 miles the first day to the end of Perdido Key where three boats met them chock full of parents, tents, sleeping bags and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Fred and little sister, Adia, kayaked along side them all day. We all camped Monday night at Fort McRee and had a great bonfire. The girls got up early on Tuesday, had breakfast and headed west. Despite bitter cold 25-mph winds, they slogged on through blowing sand for 14 miles to the Flora-Bama where they celebrated with large quantities of cheese fries and virgin strawberry daiquiris.
With just six miles to go on Wednesday, the girls walked around the western tip of Perdido Key and back to our house in just over three hours. I cooked up a mess of chicken (grilled not fried) and their grand finally was a leap off the top of our neighbor’s double-decker pier. These girls are not only adventurous but they are tough!
They have raised over $5,000 for the second year in a row! We are so proud of all of them.

They have been in several local papers again and will be on WEAR Channel 3 news next Monday 4/20/09 at 5:00 pm and Tuesday 4/21/09 at 6:00 am.
